Emergency Data Recovery FAQ

Why Do Hard Drives Lose Data?

Here at 123macpc we classify hard drive data loss in four categories:

1. Logical failure - the hard drive is in working order but some files or data cannot be accessed for logical reasons such as a lost partition or accidental reformatting. 2. Mechanical failure:- The hard drive is not functioning. Hard disk motor failures, head and head gap failures (this includes media failures of all types solid state or mechanical). Backup your backup data. See Wikipedia's Web Referenced Article. Read More

NOTICE: Trying this on your own or through an inexperienced service recovery provider may lead to further damage to the drive.

Remove those "Only secure content is displayed" popups in Internet Explorer

If you are viewing a web page in Internet Explorer, and if it contains both secure and nonsecure items (that is, if you are viewing a secure web page that contains other things such as images that are not transmitted over a secure connection), Internet Explorer gives you an annoying popup saying “Only secure content is displayed” or “This page contains both secure and nonsecure items,” asking you whether or not you want to display those nonsecured items.

Well, this can be rather annoying, and I have had experiences where I am browsing around on a website and this appears, and Internet Explorer takes me to some previous page, causing me to have to navigate back to my previous location.

Personally I choose to disable this annoying popup, and simply have Internet Explorer display nonsecure items anyways. Some might think this isn’t a very bright idea, but why not? Google Chrome does not annoy you with this, so how is Internet Explorer any different?

So if you want to disable these popups and show nonsecure items anyways, simply follow these steps:

  1. In Internet Explorer, go to the Tools menu (the cog icon in Internet Explorer 9), and click on Internet options.
  2. Under the Security tab click on the Custom level… button (be sure that Internet is selected under “Select a zone to view or change security settings”).
  3. A Security Settings window will appear with numerous options, scroll down a little past half way down, you will see an option labeled Display mixed content, there you can choose Enable (which will always display nonsecured items without asking) or Disable (which will not display nonsecure items [which defeats the purpose of this tip, but to each their own!]).
  4. Click OK, and a dialog asking if you are sure you want to change the settings for this zone, be sure to click Yes.
  5. Now click Apply and you are done.

You will no longer see that annoying popup again… Happy browsing!

Resetting Your Mac to Factory "Out of the Box Inputs and Creating a New User Login"

This really old trick has the basics for resetting a machine back to no users, so it boots to the Setup Assistant again. Things have changed in Leopard, so here's some new info.

This hint will probably be most useful for folks who configure machines for a living, but if you're selling or giving away your machine, or just troubleshooting login issues, it may come in handy. Here are the Terminal commands to delete a temporary (or lone) account in single-user mode on Leopard (in the following commands, replace username with whatever account short name you've created). Note that this must all be done in single user mode (hold Command-S during boot). Single user mode is a non-GUI, non-windows administration console for most operating systems
Follow This Procedure Below

$ mount -uw /  $ rm -R /Library/Preferences/  $ rm -R /Users/username/
(Note that deleting /Library/Preferences/ is optional and in some cases may cause problems after pre-configuring some third-party software. However, I do this after simple configs or installs, e.g., install an OS, apply Software Updates, and then give it to the end user to create a fresh account.)

Now here's what's new in Leopard:
$ rm /var/db/dslocal/nodes/Default/users/username.plist
$ rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone

While getting rid of .AppleSetupDone wasn't really necessary for OSes 10.2 thru 10.4, you do have to get rid of the Setup flag file in Leopard, or when you reboot, you'll get a login window and no working account to log in with.

If you are trying to do all this through the MACOSX it is impossible.
If you give your temporary account (or any Admin account) no password, you'll find that when you boot up and try to run sudo from a shell (bash at least), it won't work -- it just returns back to the root prompt. Always setup user passwords for the above trick
